New gossip says that Victoria Beckham and her soccer star husband might be moving near their friends Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in Los Angeles, but the former pop star is clear about one thing — it’s not about religion.
The Beckhams have struck up a close friendship with actors Cruise and Holmes, who are both Scientologists. Cruise has been spotted watching David Beckham play for Real Madrid in Spain and the wives photographed shopping and dining together.
But Beckham, 33, the former “Posh Spice” member of the 1990s band “The Spice Girls,” told a television interview to mark her family’s move to the United States that religion was nothing to do with their friendship.
“There’s been so much made of the Scientology, the this, the that. They are genuinely lovely people. Wonderful family,” Beckham said in an interview to be aired on Thursday on NBC’s “Today” program.
Beckham said religion was not an issue when the couples socialized and it had not even come up.
“They do their thing. We do our thing,” said Beckham, who was married by an Anglican Church of Ireland bishop near Dublin in 1999.
The Beckhams, who have three sons, were among a star-studded guest list at Cruise and Holmes’ Scientology wedding in Italy last November. Holmes, 28, who was raised a Catholic, gave birth to daughter Suri in April that year.
Cruise is an ardent follower of the religion founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.
David Beckham agreed to move his family to Los Angeles after signing a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy team.
